BARBADOS - National Cultural Foundation Pic-O-De-Crop 2003 Invader had TC picked as the winner, followed by, in order : Kid Site; Ian Webster; Bumba; Peter Ram; John King; Red Plastic Bag and Ishiaka. “I thought she had a lot to prove,” he said. “Given the circumstances, where she was in the hospital just before the semis, she gave a very creditable performance. I see her as a female Sugar Aloes. She delivers songs with venom better. “In her first song, Yuh Got Me Vex, her usual glide was absent, as she took on the persona of the Iraqi woman she portrayed. She captured the shock and awe in her presentation as well. “In her second song, she tied the story together, sang well and her music was good.” Invader’s say on John King: “John was the best performer for the night, but he lacked material. He too sang a play on words then a list of issues. That type of writing is passé for me; it doesn’t say a lot. “How Kid Site didn’t place I don’t know,” continued Invader. “His melodies were no worse than many on the night. It leaves me to wonder what the judges are really looking for. “The system of judging is poor and fundamentally flawed. Anyone can write down anything and there is no one to ensure that the standard of lyrics is maintained. That is a fundamental weakness. Still, it is the calypsonians who said there should be no discussion.” Invader issued a challenge to the Pic-O-De-Crop judges: “The judges should be brave enough to put their marks in the paper, just like I am doing now, and sign their names to them, instead of hiding behind anonymity, and let’s have a national debate. I want them to tell us how they judged Kid Site. Right now the Emperor is naked and no one is saying anything.” The NATION’s judge-for-a-night added: “I hope all parties now see the embarrassing situation with the second songs. Also, I must say that it was refreshing to hear Boo Rudder’s truly analytical approach on television, rather than the platitudes and simplistic comments we have had over the years.” Compliments of the Nation News |
