People Make Their Statement - Friday 30, July-2004
Beating Edwin Yearwood of krosfyah with Sugar Cane who received 45 per cent of the votes, Statement received 55 per cent to be this year’s champ. A shocked Statement told the audience gathered in front of the River Road station plus thousands of on-air listeners that he was overwhelmed. He thanked God, his parents, producer Darron Grant and the entire krosfyah family for their support. Statement won a beige two-door Suzuki Grand Vitara and will be insured with one of the People’s Monarch’s sponsors, Equity Insurance. Compliments of the Nation
News by Janelle Walters What’s a calypso tent without lewd lyrics, wukking up and raucous jokes? According to motivational speaker, Errol Griffith, it’s an Experience, which also happens to be the name of the island’s newest tent of which he is one of the organisers. The Experience tent, located in Ring Bang City, St Lawrence, Christ Church, was birthed from Griffith’s and his colleagues’ desire to contribute something “wholesome” to the Barbadian society. Griffith said it came to him last August that a “wholesome” tent was needed in Barbados. He soon got into contact with other like-minded people and things took off. “We want to use the calypso and the Crop-Over medium to offer something uplifting to the Barbadian public,” he said, adding: “We guarantee that there will be no wukking up; nothing that is lewd and crude. It will be a family affair.” The tent, whose members are now into some three weeks of practice in preparation for their opening later this month, will feature ten performers whom artistic director Mike Sealy said he prefers to call “messengers” Noting that their aim was to promote “moral and righteous habits”, Sealy said: “I think we have a strong voice.” Included in the line-up are popular DJ Ronnie Clarke, veteran gospel artiste James Leacock and NIFCA award-winning performers Rommel Hall and Simon Alleyne. Sealy said his goal was to produce the best possible product in order to make an indelible impact on the audience. He also said he hoped to see the tent continue beyond the Crop-Over season. Despite the obvious representation of Christian artistes and organisers, Griffith said: “We are not labelling it as a Christian tent, it’s a wholesome, family based tent.” He said over the years many people have spoken about the growing lewdness in the lyrics. “We feel God led us to do this,” he stressed. “It’s the first time for something like this and we are doing this trying to add some salt and light. We want to exemplify what is right . . . .” Compliments of the Nation News |
