BARBADOS - National Cultural Foundation Opening Gala
The festival starts with the Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes, delivered in a brightly coloured donkey cart.
There is Maypole dancing and the Land Ship is out in force!
The crowd is entertained by a variety of music including the Barbados Police Bank,
the visiting band in 2003 Xtrak from the lovely island of Carriacou.
Calypso competitions climax at the Pic-O-De-Crop finals with the crowning of the calypso king or queen. 25 000 spectators at the Party Monarch Finals last year watched in amazement as Li'l Rick made his grand entrance paragliding into the Calypso Bowl.
The grand finale is Kadooment Day which starts at the National Stadium.
The National Cultural Foundation (NCF) is patting itself on the back for having pulled in some of the largest Crop-Over crowds ever. According to its marketing officer Carol Roberts, Monday saw the largest number of Barbadians and visitors flocking to the Spring Garden Highway.
