Barbados Jazz Festival 2004

John King turned the key, Toni Norville seen with the Fuh Real dancers, opened the door and Martiniquan group Bwakoré invited Bajans to savour the musical sounds that will be the highlight of night life for the next eight days.

What a start to the 11th annual Barbados Jazz Festival!

National Heroes Square reverberated with the sounds of soca, soul and belé last night as three acts began what promises to be another great festival of music.

“I’m happy,” declared Gilbert Rowe of GMR International, producer of the festival. “This is what will be happening, Lord spare life, for the next ten years, taking the free concerts to St Philip, Christ Church. We look forward to doing a show like this in St John,” he told the SUNDAY SUN.

Today’s Jazz On The Beach at Brandon’s features pannist David Ziggy Walcott, The Abstract Band and Puerto Rican group Sepulveda.

Richard Bona keeps the Farley Hill crowd in the jazz groove.

THE ADAGE that music is a universal language perhaps best typified Day 6 of the Barbados Jazz Festival yesterday.
A huge crowd soaked up the sun, sounds and scenery at Farley Hill Park, savouring a mixture of Latin, oriental, African-flavoured and standard jazz.

Cameroon’s outstanding bassist Richard Bona was perhaps the star of the show.

The East in the form of the band Hiroshima and especially June Kuramoto on the koto, and Japan’s Shoji Kameda on the Taiko, brought a distinctly different sound to the occasion which was absorbed with relish.

The festival concludes today at the same location.

Barbados Jazz 2003

The 10th Annual Barbados Jazz Festival was held in January 2003. It celebrates the best in International, Caribbean and local jazz talent. It has become a major annual Caribbean event.

Venues included the modern Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, historic Sunbury Plantation House and the popular open air venue, Farley Hill National Park.
