Lionel Richie performing along with guitarist Ben Mauro
and saxophonist Dino Soldo. He took a massive crowd at the Garfield Sobers
Gymnasium on an unforgettable journey through his musical life at the
Barbados Jazz Festival.
JAZZ STARTS BLOW FANS AWAY. Jazz in its variety and spontaneity
brought magical riffs to Sunbury House when the 13th Barbados Jazz Festival
opened. Performing at the tree-lined venue were Roy Hargrove on trumpet
and flugelhorn, and vocalist Roberta Gambarini, who surprised the packed
house by making her voice sound exactly like a trumpet. She sang for most
of the show, but cupped her hands over the microphone midway in the set,
and
blew patrons away with her "riffs". The real riffs, however,
came from Hargrove who, in tandem with saxophonist Justin Robinson, ended
the show with a mixture of funky forays and Afro-Cuban rhythms.
The 13th Barbados Jazz Festival has
a line-up of artists that includes Jill Scott, Lionel Ritchie, Arturo
Tappin, Boney James, Cuban Jazz All-Stars as well as local artists
Artwork and Wayne Willock.
"We are delighted to welcome The Sol Group on board,"
said Gilbert Rowe, organiser of the festival.
"It is the support of companies like Sol that allows us to
showcase the acts that will grace the stage of the Barbados Jazz
Festival 2006." (PR)
JUST JILLIN'. Jill Scott sang her way into Bajans'
hearts at the Gymnasium last night, crooning numbers like A Long
Walk for which she won a Grammy award recently, as well as The Way,
He Loves Me and Cross My Mind. The 32-year-old jazz, R&B and
neo-soul artist from Philadelphia was the first of two headliners
to appear at the seven-day Barbados Jazz Festival – the other
being veteran R&B vocalist Lionel Richie, who will perform tomorrow.
Along with her albums, Scott has also released a book of poetry,

THE SOL GROUP is on board as a sponsor of this year's
Barbados Jazz Festival.
"We are proud to be involved with the world-renowned Barbados Jazz
Festival," said Mark Clarke, sales and marketing manager of Sol (Barbados)
Limited.
"It is one of the Caribbean's premier events and a world-class product,
very much like Sol, which is a Caribbean organisation offering a global
brand and operating to world-class standards."
Clarke added: "We are also pleased to be associated with an event
that enhances both Barbados' tourism and cultural products by bringing
visitors to the island and enriching the cultural landscape."
He noted that the company was particularly supportive of the work being
done by the organisers, GMR International Tours, over the years to highlight
local talent on the international stage.
